February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of African Americans' achievements and a time to recognize their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, it honors all Black people from all periods of U.S. history, from the enslaved people first brought over from Africa in the early 17th century to African Americans living in the United States today.

2026 marks a milestone of both progress and persistence in the United States, the 100th anniversary of federal recognition for Black Americans. What began as a singular week of learning and recognition called Negro History Week in 1926 has grown into an overall cultural observance of Black History throughout February.

Black History Month is often associated with familiar icons - Martin Luther King, Jr, Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, and Harriet Tubman. Yet the deeper intention is to uncover thousands of stories once ignored: scientists, entrepreneurs, artists, academics, inventors, policy leaders, soldiers, and everyday citizens who shaped the nation.

Here are six ways you can celebrate Black History Month 2026 at home:

  • Support & Local Action: Actively shop at Black-owned businesses, visit museums, and donate to organizations dedicated to racial equality.

  • Education & Culture: Read books by Black authors, watch documentaries, and explore Black music history.

  • Events & Activities: Participate in workshops (e.g., line dancing, quilt-making), join walking tours, or attend virtual educational and cultural events.

  • Workplace & Community: Organize panel discussions, share educational resources, and recognize Black colleagues' achievements.

  • Digital Engagement: Use social media to share stories and explore digital programs from institutions like the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture.

  • Lastly and most importantly, remember to prioritize celebrating black history with your family. By making the time to connect and celebrate the stories around you, you are teaching your child to make the world a better place.
